Breath

When I sing
I slowly allow the air to rise
from the depths of my diaphragm
slowing upwards in my lungs
ever so slowly until
I float like a balloon but
remain on the ground.
My shoulders frame my breath.
Holding the air there
with structure and shape.

Learning to hold it there
until the end of the bar
until the comma in the phrase,
until the end of the song.

It is what gives my voice wings.
